Great saw when used as it was intended.

I have used this saw on several occassions and it has worked very well. I took down and limbed an entire, sizable apple tree in one hour on a single battery with this chainsaw. It also cut through a 7-8 inch shrub root on a dulling chain (used it the entire day cutting shrub limbs) fairly well. This is a great value on a relatively low maintenance chainsaw and is perfect for occassional, light use by any homeowner.
    Pros:

compatible with my other cordless B&D tools. cuts well, decent run time.

    Cons:

    no complaints.

Good little saw for small branches and yard work once I fixed it.

I have many hours with gas chain saws. Now I am retired and thought a small light battery operated saw would fit my needs for convenience. Right out of the box I had trouble with the chain stalling as soon as I started a cut but the motor would keep running, By putting only very light pressure I managed to cut through a couple of 1" branches. I put it in the shed as useless a year ago. Last week I needed to do some yard clean up and tried the saw again. Same problem. I took the saw apart and found that the gear that drove the chain sprocket was slipping on the shaft. There is no keyway or pin to prevent it from slipping. I took the gear assembly to a machine shop and had a 1/8" dia X 1/4" long pin installed between the shaft and gear. This locked the gear on the shaft. I put the saw back together and it now works as it was desgned and I am pleased with it. I am not pleased with Black and Decker or their design engineers. This was way to basic to be overlooked by their engineers.
    Pros:

After fixing it I am pleased with the convenience of using it for light duty, when I need it, without starting problems or having to make a trip for fresh gas. I have two batteries and keep them plugged in as recommended. That is more than enough for my needs. I am happy that I don't need to mess with the gasoline for infrequent use. The batteries also get used for my edge trimmer. The liberal amount of oil for the chain is not a problem for me since it is necessary to keep the chain cutting properly. It is a chain saw.

    Cons:

Reliability out of the box. Made in China. I would gladly pay more for a quality product made in the USA. For that I can only give it 3 stars.

    Extremely Dissatisfied

I bought this to take care of a medium sized apple tree branch, and it didn't make a dent. The chain will not stay on long enough to do any cutting. I got the chain to cut about 1/4 in. into the main brach which is about 6 in. in diameter. My thinking was that maybe that branch was too thick so I tried cutting a smaller branch that is about 1 1/2 in. in diameter and it again only cut about 1/4 in. in before the chain popped off. I tried putting all my body weight into it to see if that helped cut, but it was no use.
    Pros:

    light, easy to assemble

    Cons:

Does not cut, chain falls off frequently

Not as good as expected from B&D

The item out of the box felt cheap and light. I used it for the first time and only got 40 cuts out of the inital charge on the battery. It was weak and had a hard time cutting 1" brances. I don't think I would recommend this to anyone else.
    Pros:

The price and was lightweight, almost felt like a toy.

    Cons:

The power was less than expected

this is a good saw for light trimming around the house but the battery life is terrible and the charge time is 9 hours!!!!! so you had better buy a few of them but at $40 each you will have a lot of money tied up in it.
    Pros:

    light

    Cons:

battery life is terrible and black & decker wants you to buy the li ion one. they wont return it even when i offered to pay the diff in price. they clearly have a problem with battery life or they wouldnt have gone to the li ion battery.

    Great little saw.

Great for light cutting of small trees and limbs. Battery life lasted longer than expected. Saw does way more than it has a right to. Very pleased.
    Pros:

One Source Battery feature very cool. I have several B&D yard tools and bought them mainly because of this feature.

    Cons:

Only one chain. An extra chain would be nice.

I like the idea of a light weight battery chainsaw for projects around my house. This chain saw fits that bill.

I wanted a light weight battery chainsaw for projects around my house. I have several other B&D products and have been very satisfied with them
    Pros:

Light weight and battery operated. I do not like gas powered chainsaws

    Cons:

The chain constantly falls off. I keep tightening it but it only last for a short time before it falls off again. Any suggestions?

So light, makes cutting trees, limbs and branches a snap

Lots of initial confusion. The store display showed a Type 1, which has a built in oiling system. The item I bought from stock was a Type 2, which requires manual oiling of the chain from an oil can or bottle (archaic). I called B&D support and after lots of confusion on their part, got the answer that Type 2 has a built in oiling system. NO SUCH THING!!! Swapped the saw at another store which had the Type 1. These should have model numbers that indicate the difference, e.g., an "A" and "B" suffix. Its cute how the carton pictures of the Type 2 saw have been retouched to eliminate the oiling cap/bulb.
    Pros:

Despite the confusion, its really a delight. No hassle with extension cords is a pleasure. I have several B&D tools in the product line and swapping around batteries is very convenient!!!!

    Cons:

    Nothing. Its great.

Great Product for Storm clean up

Due to a recent Colorado snow storm, had several tree branches that didn't survive. Job not big enough for gas powered chainsaw so purchased the CCS818 from a big box home improvement store. Little worried about the size thinking it might not be what I was looking for. Have several other B&D products so had 4 18V batteries already. Assembly was easy (although a little tricky holding the bar/chain and putting cover back on). Using a fully charged battery, was able to make quick work of the downed branches. The chainsaw work perfectly for me for this smaller project. Won't use for big projects but didn't buy it for that. Good work B&D would definitely purchase again.
    Pros:

Light weight, easy to handle, plenty of power/cutting ability for the 5" to 6" branches I was working with, good battery life (worked almost non stop for 3 hours on a single battery), quiet

    Cons:

I thought I was buying a model with an auto chain/bar oiler but the one I got didn't have that (manual)
